JAKE PARINGATAI

Position: No 8

Physical: 1.85m, 86kg

Born: 13:04:80

Province: Northland

Provincial Caps: 37 games

Provincial Debut: 2003 v North Harbour

Super 14 Caps: 4

Super 14 Debut: 2007 v Blues

A newcomer via the draft to the Crusaders for the 2007 campaign, powerful No 8 Jake Paringatai’s potential was first recognised at national level in 2004 when he was chosen for the New Zealand Maori side that attended the Churchill Cup tournament in Canada. Paringatai was back in North America with the Maori side in 2006, and backed up that achievement on his return by featuring in every minute of Northland’s 10 match programme in the inaugural Air New Zealand Cup. He scored two tries for his province during that tournament. During Paringatai’s first Super 14, one of his appearances was earned as a replacement lock – a position he had never played before in first class rugby.

Update on the “Gunman and the prop” story:

To follow on from this story gunman-faced-down-by-prop I heard a bit more in regard to the matter during the week.

It appears that while he was talking down the dopey git who was trying to rob him, he had his mike button on constantly and that every taxi driver in the Limerick area was converging on the location, as well as half a dozen paddy wagons and squads I suppose.

Anyway, I’m told by a reliable inside source that the weapon was dry-fired at Barry, cocked and dry-fired again and then he got a belt of it in the face for good measure, just before he proceeded to “Learn him a lesson” so to speak… Unluckiest unarmed, armed robber of all time is how one mate of mine put it… C.S.I. and forensics are looking for the last few pieces of him as we speak……. G’man Barry.
But seriously, he’s one lucky fellah yer man either had no bullets or was such a dope he couldn’t work the thing…….
