The Irish Rugby Football Union has announced changes to Division One of the AIB League to be implemented for the 2009/10 season. The new format will deliver greater competition and excitement for players and supporters alike during what will be a more intensive season from start to finish and will work in conjunction with the present league structure of three divisions.

Under the new structure, AIB League Division One will be split into two sections of eight teams each on a meritocracy basis, with all teams playing each other on a home and away basis each season.

The top three teams in Section A and the top team in Section B at the end of the season will go forward to the play-offs for the overall title of ‘AIB League Division One champions.’

The two junior teams got their seasons up and running this weekend. The J2’s (or thirds) played a pre-season friendly against St. Senans of Shannon on Saturday evening. They ran out 13-nils winners in a very competitive game. This was their first game under the new ELV’s and reaction to the new laws seems to be mixed. Thanks to Derek Noonan who gave up some free time on Friday evening to explain the new laws to the squad.

The J1’s meanwhile got a harder than expected run out against Presentation in the first round of the Transfield cup. Eventually winning the game by 19pts to 7. Pres showed great resiliance against a fairly experienced Bruff 15.

Reminder that the Senior and J1 team train every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm and the J2 team train Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm.

This seasons U20 squad are also asked to attend training this Wednesday and Friday night at 7.30 sharpe
