This encounter ended up a fair bit more one sided than originally  thought. Bruff looked dominant from the off, although the pace of the game was hectic right from the get go.

The Bruff pack were dominant throughout, the Lineouts came together perfectly, Scrums were awesome, driving from Máirtín and Alfie was Excellent. 16 minutes in Máirtín drove over for try number one, to which Davy Maw added the extras, Marty hurt his shoulder in the process and was replaced by Maurice O’Connell.  This was followed four minutes later by John Moore. 12 points up and the game looked almost over from a Clonakilty point of view. Davy Maw missed a penalty on 25, this was then quickly followed by Peter Malone adding try number three on 30 mins, Davy added the extras . The only reply in the first half was a sole penalty from Clon No. 12 Derek Lombard on 37 mins. Bruff went in at half time 19-3 up, a bit of Hanbags just before half time resulting in Captain Cathal O’ Regan being binned for the first eight minutes of the second half.

The second half started with a major push from both sides to get on top. An extremely fast paced first ten minutes finally resulted in Davy Maw kicking a penalty on 47 minutes and  Brian Cahill going over for try number four on 50 minutes, again Davy Adding the extras. On 55 minutes, Clonakilty winger J. O’ Donnell going over for their only try of the game, again the No. 12 adding the extras.

Tha twas the last of the scoring, the only element of note being the binning of Dermot Murnane on 77 minutes and Bruff ran out comfortable winners by 29 points to 10.

The first XV made extremely hard work of this first round match against Junior Club Crosshaven last Saturday.

To be honest it was a case of almost being architects of their own doom, the were completely dominant in the scrum and pack, at the ruck, in the lineout, lines of attack in the backs were excellent but they just couldn’t get scores on the board. Going in at half time with a 10 -nil lead was just not enough for the amount of possession that they had and it nearly cost dearly.

The second half began with another try and conversion to put Bruff ahead by 17 points but a dominant first twenty minutes ended up with nothing to show on the scoreboard and pretty soon we saw that lead whittled away to practically nothing when the Corosshaven pack started to get their Pack moving for the first time in the game. One quick five minute period of pack pressure from Crosshaven and the lead disappeared, a third unconverted try almost bringing them home, a single penalty at this stage giving Bruff a slender two-point lead.

Come the last minute a final try by David Mau, which he converted himself put a gloss on the scoreline, and Bruff finished 28-19 winners, to be honest it was no more than they deserved if you were to guage by the amount of possession that they had but boy was it close in the finish.

Fair play to Crosshaven who despite going backwards in the scrum and coming out second in ball possession on the ground, never gave up and it almost paid off, the roars at the finish from the partisan crowd letting them know how proud their supporters were of them.

Too close for comfort, but a win is a win, is a win as the saying goes.

Roll on the next round away to Dolphin, at 2:00 on the 8th of November.

The thirds followed on from last weeks 13-nil victory over St. Senans with a 25-5 win over Connacht Junior side Portumna in Bruff on Sunday Morning.

Trys from JP Herlihy, Ger Cronin, Peter Twomey and JP Moloney were enough to see off the opposition in a largely one sided game.

Thanks to all the lads who turned up especially the guys who were rang at short notice to fill a team. Also Brian C who got a late call to ref the game.

The two junior teams got their seasons up and running this weekend. The J2’s (or thirds) played a pre-season friendly against St. Senans of Shannon on Saturday evening. They ran out 13-nils winners in a very competitive game. This was their first game under the new ELV’s and reaction to the new laws seems to be mixed. Thanks to Derek Noonan who gave up some free time on Friday evening to explain the new laws to the squad.

The J1’s meanwhile got a harder than expected run out against Presentation in the first round of the Transfield cup. Eventually winning the game by 19pts to 7. Pres showed great resiliance against a fairly experienced Bruff 15.

Reminder that the Senior and J1 team train every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm and the J2 team train Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm.

This seasons U20 squad are also asked to attend training this Wednesday and Friday night at 7.30 sharpe

"Getting to Grips" with Bruff's John Shine

Getting to grips with Shiner

Well, We’re off.

The first run out of the Bruff First XV saw a very changed and experimental side lining out against U.L. Bohs last Monday night in the Limerick Charity Cup.

The pace of the game was extremely fast right from the start and Bohs’s couple of runs already this season really showed. It took a long time for the Bruff side to settle into the game and after twenty minutes they ended up 20 points to nil down following two fairly easy tries by Martin McPhail, both converted by Fergal Lawlor with only a single missed penalty by Full back Paul O’ Brien as a Bruff attack of any consequence. Another try by Bohs Prop Kevin Flanagan on 40 mins and it looked like becoming a rout before Eoin Cahill touched down on the stroke of half time to go in 25 points to five down at the break.

The second half was a much different affair with Bruff really settling into the game finally and it was nip and tuck all the way. Bruff finally settled into a routine but some missed passes going astray cost them dearly when in front of the try-line. Another brace of tries for Bohs and a return from Eoin Cahill saw a final score of 35 to 10.

The new ELV’s didn’t seem to cause any major problems for all concerned, the tactic of kicking to outside the 22 preventing both sides from returning kicks to touch, the mauls were pulled down almost straight away, we’ll see a return to the Old fashioned “Rolling” maul in an effort to get momentum in the forwards, both sides seemed to get caught in the rucks a couple of times but this rule is always going to be very much down to referee interpretation and when the season is in full flight we’ll see how the rules end up panning out in “real time”.

All in all, a good blow out for the first run of the season. When the full squad gets back together coming closer to AIL time we should see some major improvements. Eoin Maher was also a bit of a revelation stepping up from the Twenties squad as scrum half, while maybe not getting to grips with the pace fully at the outset (and he wasn’t alone in that) he settled in very quickly and had a good game. Good game from Alfie Laffan overall as well.. It was also great to see Peter Malone back in the yellow and maroon for the first time in a few years.
