It’s that time of the year again folks, the summer (if you could call it that) is gasping it’s last breath as the days are getting shorter, and we’re back in full swing at Kilballyowen with training under lights having commenced for yet another year.

At this stage all age groups from Under 8’s to under 38’s J are all back training and we’re kicking off this weekend with all adult teams out.

Saturday we have the first round of the Munster Senior cup where we have had great success for the last two years with a win against Garryowen in the final two years ago leading on to that fabulous success at Bateman Cup All Ireland level. Last year we fell at the final hurdle to the same Garryowen and they repeated the feat bringing the cup back to Limerick for the second successive year.

First round this year takes us against a Cashel side that has become one of the success stories of the last few seasons. Like ourselves four years ago, they ran for the last season unbeaten and gained promotion on the back of a fantastic run in the UBL gaining division 2A status after only 12 months at 2B level. Another club that has reaped the rewards of a good underage system they have travelled up the Junior ranks over the last few years knocking at the door of the Senior ranks for a year or two prior to making that final leap.

From our point of view, our run in the league finished very strongly as we came out on top of games against three of the top four teams in our division in the second half of the season after a rough starting half, to finish up maintaining our status in Division 1B. It’s going to be a tight game with no quarter asked or given, it’ll be very interesting to see which side comes out on top, of course I’m rooting for Bruff. Kick off at 2:30pm on Saturday in Kilballyowen Park.

First round of the Munster Senior Seconds league takes place either Sunday or Monday night (Not fixed at the time of publication) and we have the J2 squad lining out in the McInerny cup against St. Senans on Saturday, again time TBC.

Just another note, we are accepting players at all levels from total beginners to experienced, from anyone who wants to play socially or who wants to get a little more serious, all squads from U20, J2 & J1 level are starting out afresh with anew season so if you fancy getting involved then why not just show up on a Tuesday or Thursday night from 7:00pm onwards.

Ladies are still taking in beginners and/or more experienced players, they are training on Monday and Friday evenings at 8:00pm after the fitness classes.

Friday evening there are two U14 squads with game against Glenstal, check the website for details.

As usual, underage training etc. at the usual times, contact the coaches at the various grades.

Bruff U 14’s continued their winning ways with an extremely hard fought win over Mullingar in a friendly fixture. The 2 1/2 hour trip to our hosts was extremely pleasant and the weather perfect for good rugby to be played. 25 players travelled and soon thanks to Tom Breen and Darren Kennedy Bruff raced into a 12-0 lead with John Bulfin scoring a conversion. Mullingar responded with 2 well worked tries, a conversion and penalty to lead 15-12 half way through the game. Mullingar then proceeded to put us under severe pressure and pulled away 27-12 with only 15 minutes remaining. Then the grandstand finish commenced with Tom Breen scoring a second try to make it 27-19 with Richard Bateman landing the conversion. Then Cathal O’Doherty on the left wing scored a fantastic try in the corner to give us real hope of an upset and once again Richard Bateman landed the conversion. 27-26 with 3 minutes remaining..Game on…..Bruff gathered the kick off and after several periods of recycling the ball man of the match Tom Breen once again raced over for his 3rd try to leave the score 31- 27 to Bruff. The final whistle sounded soon after and sparked some great cheering and delight from the visitors. Our hosts were extremely gracious and looked after us very well in the clubhouse. Many thanks to Mullingar and we look forward to hosting them in the future. Training resumes on Wednesday night and our next League fixture is at home to Garryowen on the 20th November

Under 14’s v Young Munsters

Well Anything the All Blacks can do Bruff U 14’s can do better as they put on a sensational second half show to turn this highly entertaining u 14 league tie around. Played in poor conditions that you can only expect in late October, Bruff trailed 5-0 at half time after Young Munsters centre scored a good try going over in the  right hand corner. They were very unfortunate to miss the resulting conversion. Bruff sustained 2 injuries in the 1st half forcing 2 changes in the backs, which disrupted their game but thankfully neither injury was serious.  JD and Jerome gave a rousing half time talk and Bruff came out all guns firing for the second half and were rewarded for consistent pressure when wing forward Gareth Cooke scored under the posts, Matthew O ‘Dea slotted the resulting conversion and Bruff lead 7-5. Straight from the kickoff again Bruff charged for the Young musters line and after 5 mins of consistent pressure centre Tom Breen broke through 3 tackles to score, the conversion was missed but Bruff had a lead of 12-5 with  10 mins to go….Odhran Ring and Stephen Dunworth were introduced and they lead another charge which saw Young Munsters penalised for a breakdown infringement in front of their posts and Matt O’Dea coolly slotted the penalty to leave the score 15-5 in Bruff’s favour.  A magnificent effort all round and leaves Bruff with 2 wins from their first 3 games of the season. Well done to all
