1st XV home to Clonmel in R3 of the Energia AIL Bruff RFC 14 Clonmel RFC 14

The seniors earned a hard fought points on a breezy Saturday afternoon at kilballyowen. We played into the wind in the first half and we dominated the early exchanges .The first20mins was very even with both sides not creating too many chances and with defenses on top we got our chance and Bruff took an early lead 7-0 after 20 minutes, try Kieran O Dwyer converted by Adam O Dwyer. Clonmel popped in for a try 30 min gone after a long period of defensive work done by Bruff 7-7 going into half time , after enduring some pressure from the away team we found ourselves inside the Clonmel 22 and after some excellent retention from the lads Kieran O Dwyer went in to score again another great convert from Adam O Dwyer. With 15mins to go Bruff were 14-7 and there was a hard fought battle for both sides for the next 10mins until Clonmel came in from the wing to score again which they converted. It ended on the day 14-14.  Great effort from the team and well done to the coaches and management. Thanks to our supporters young and old who came over today to see the match.

  • Bruff U18.5 at home to Clanwilliam
After a big turnout at training on Friday night the Bruff U18.5 carried their good form in training through to the match today. From the first kick of the match Bruff immediately went on the attack with the ball in hand. There was great continuity in bruffs play with both backs and forwards linking with confidence. Bruffs captain Shane Duggan, Oisin Feeley and Jimmy Stokes were very much to the fore with some big carries in this period. Eventually the Bruff pressure was rewarded with a fine break and try from Shane Duggan converted by Conor Dowling. Bruff were dominant in this period with some fine line out work by Danny Kavanagh Padraig Vaughan and Ciaran Lefebvre. In the backs Ethan Cumes, Sean O’Neill, Conor Dowling, and Shane Duggan again put in some big hits in the middle of the field, Jack Mcnamara, Hugh Clogan, safe in defense and elusive in attack.  It wasn’t long before Bruff were scoring their second try, again scored by Shane Duggan, Conor Dowling who was distributing great ball from the number nine position was unlucky with the conversion. In fairness to Clanwilliam they upped their game after this score, and they scored a try while a Bruff had a player in the sin bin. They were unable to convert this score. Shane Lynch and Ciaran Cronin kept the Bruff going forward in the scrums and rucks especially while Bruff were down a man. Bruff were full value for their half time lead of 12 to Clanwilliam 5. The second half saw the Adam Casey had to be replaced due to a knee injury because of a late tackle. Adam had been playing some outstanding rugby distributing the ball well from the out-half position and running some great attack lines. He was ably replaced by Darragh O Loughlin, Conor Dowling moved to out half where he kept Clanwilliam pinned back in there owe half with some great touch line kicks. The Bruff half time replacements Tadgh Corkery, Euan Hickey Colin Bresnahan, Oisin Rhatigan and Adam Kelleher all helped in grinding Clanwilliam down which led for a hat trick try for man of the match Shane Duggan. Bruff were over the line on a number of occasions in the second half but were unable to ground the ball. The final score was Bruff 17 Clanwilliam 5.

A good win for Bruff and we wish Adam Casey a speedy recovery.

In the second half Bruff got their second try 15 minutes in scored by Jamie Walsh and converted by Matthew Daly. Bruff were on top at this stage and some nice play by the backline saw Shane Dowling receive the ball on his own 10m and beat four Shannon defenders, to run the ball in and score a try. Under 18’s

Bruff Under 18’s played Ennis in an exciting encounter in Kilballyowen today. Ennis started off the game the better of the two sides putting Bruff under pressure.  At the start of the game, they gathered the ball from the kick-off and ran down the pitch into the top right-hand corner a quick try and a conversion Bruff started well but as they attacked on the Ennis 22 m line a handling error gave Ennis possession due to Bruff backs being caught in a ruck a mismatch was created out wide from which Ennis scored against the run of play.  Bruff settled into the game with both teams playing attractive rugby. Ennis then went right stretching the home defence and then worked it to the left where off loads and good handling skills put Ennis in again for an excellent try which was converted. It was then Bruff’s turn to come back into the game and gain ground, Bruff showed plenty of endeavour but just lacked the precision required with knocks on’s and turnovers halting their momentum. Another handling error while Bruff were again on the attack led to the ball being fly hacked down field and Bruff were once more defending on their own 22m line. After several carries by Ennis pack, they finally went wide and scored in the corner this was converted by their kicker. With Oisin Feeley carrying some great ball in attack ably assisted in carries by Darragh O’Brien and Stephen McNulty some great line out work by Michael Clifford, Ciaran Lefebvre and Danny Kavanagh. The Bruff props of Ciaran Cronin and Shane Leahy were now getting a nudge on their counter parts at scrum time. Unfortunately, another handling error led to loss of possession and a try for Ennis. Bruff finished the half camped on the Ennis line but with some last-ditch defence and the concession of several penalties Ennis held out. During this period of sustained pressure Adam Casey who ran some great ball at out half saw one of his penalty kicks come off the post. The second half began with Bruff on the attack again Bruff Captain Shane Duggan leading the charge by leaping in the air to collect cleanly Adams drop off. Great running by the Bruff backs Ethan Cumes, Tadgh Corkery, Lorcan Costello, Sean O’Neill, Euan Hickey could have led to a try but unfortunately some loose handling by Bruff let the chances slip. Hugh Clogan was rock solid under all ball kicked to him all day and set up some good counter attacks. Both teams started to ring the changes, and the last fifteen minutes were not a comfortable one for Ennis as Bruff applied the pressure inside their own twenty-two. Another handling error was responsible for Ennis’s final and only try in the second half. Adam Kelligher came on at half back, Jack McNamara and Colin Bresnihan in the back three, Oisin Rathigan in the forwards all made great contributions but Bruff were unable to get over the line and Ennis were relieved when the ball was put of play to on the final whistle. Thanks to all the supporters that came out today to show your support. It was a good outing against a big Ennis team, as it was only our second game and Bruff know there is room for great improvement.
