This pan Munster playoff match was not for the faint hearted. Bruff opened the scoring on 25 min. Penalty by Jack Barrett. The half time score was  3 – 0 to Bruff. With 45 mins gone Bruff scored the first try through Brendan Gleeson,  good work by the forwards for Gleeson to crash over to make the score 8 -0 to Bruff .

Young Munster got into the game on the 50 minute with a converted try  to make the score 8-7. Young. Munster reaped rewards from Bruff errors to score their second try on 55 minutes which was converted to make it 14-8 to the cookies. With Baltic conditions and the wind blowing into their faces and time running out it looked as if it wasn’t going to be our day. Through a great break by Robbie Holmes from his own 22 m to the cookies 22 m set up the final few minutes of drama. The Bruff forwards rucked and mauled their way to the cookies try line for Sean Cregan to crash over  to make the score 14 -13 to Young Munster. The drama was to continue with Ross O’ Brien May stepping up to take the convert. To every one on the side line this kick looked an easy kick. Not the normal place kicker Ross stepped up with great composure to slot the kick 15-14 to Bruff.

The last four minutes seemed to last forever but Bruff showed great character to see out the game and win. Well done to team and coaches on reaching the last 8 in the pan Munster. For the parents looking for something to do next Sunday it’s a trip to Waterford to take on Waterpark in the Pan Munster Quarter Final.

Bruff u20’s will contest the semi-final of the league vs UCC next Saturday Feb 25th thanks to a 35-21 win over UL Boh’s at home in Kilballyowen at the weekend. Bruff went into last weekends game knowing they needed a bonus point win to ensure a play-off place in what was the last round of the league phase of the competition. The pressure didn’t get to them and they delivered in style securing the try bonus before half time. Bruff had 2 tries each from Dylan Reeves-Wasik and Liam Barret with Cian Clifford also getting in for a try. Kevin Mcmanus provided the extras from the boot.

Saturdays game will be a massive challenge travelling to face the run away league leaders UCC in the Mardyke. But Bruff will not fear their opponents haven already beaten them 10-21 when the sides met in early January.

Following the fantastic win against Kanturk on Friday evening, we had a gathering of players from the earliest to the current to come together along with some of the travelling Kanturk horde to honour one of Bruff RFC’S longest serving players and members.

Mike “Barlow” O’Donnell played as a second row in the very first ever scratch game played by Bruff in late 69, played around the province at Junior Level through the 70’s and 80’s, made tour appearances during the 90’s in Glasgow and Nottingham and finished his 5 decade spanning career with his final appearance in the Yellow and Maroon in  Bruff’s first ever competitive game as a Senior Rugby club in the Veterans World Cup against the US Navy in August 2004.

Following a night of memories and apocryphal stories from many of the current and former players present, Bruff President Nicholas Cooke presented Mike with the Life Presidents blazer to tumultuous applause followed by some great words about the current squad and a lovely thank you from the man himself.

From one and all of us Mike, thank you for the great memories, you and your equals are the lifeblood of our club and we hope to see as more of you in your new role.

Thanks again from all of us!
