Last Friday night saw a completely packed house in Kilballyowen for the Bruff RFC charity night in aid of the Coiscéim Eile Lokomat Appeal.
The evening kicked off with an hour of music from the brilliant Cáirde Ceoil, who have an album being released in the very near future. There wasn’t a space left in the house before the kickoff with people trooping in from about 7:30pm onwards to ensure that they got a good seat, although fear of the following act may have caused an initial rush to the seats farthest from the aisles.
After the interval, Comedian Jon Kenny took to the stage and what followed was an hour and a half of absolutely brilliant mayhem, with sketches covering everything from Puberty and growing up in Hospital to Rugby with even Munster, Lansdowne and D4 Leinster supporters on the receiving end. Without sounding biased, this was probably the best gig that I have ever seen Jon perform. He had the audience in the palm of his hand from start to finish, rolling in the aisles one minute and you could hear a pin drop the next, more than ably backed up with his guitar and Ivor Ottley on strings for the musical sections. To put it simply, he was on fire, an absolutely fabulous night.
After another interval, we continued with the Auction of Sports memorabilia, with signed Munster, Ireland and Lions jerseys , Thomond Park Prints, Limerick Football Team Jersey and Ruby Walsh’s Britches from the Galway Races all going under the hammer, brilliantly conducted by the Master of Ceremonies for the night, former Auctioneer and Chairman of Limerick Co. Co. Matt O’ Callaghan. Following a raffle draw conducted by Joan Ryan of Coiscéim Eile for the remainder of the prizes kindly donated by our many, many thoughtful sponsors, the night finally drew to a close finishing off with a disco courtesy of Club DJ Eugene O’ Sullivan into the small hours.
A great success, the night proved a few things to us. Firstly that local sporting organisations and the general local community are still very willing to support noble causes when they need it most and secondly that here at Bruff RFC, we are more than capable of running and holding any kind of event from a fantastic night like this to Christening parties, First communion parties, Weekend long events like the Irish Caravan and Camping Club Rally last May Bank Holiday, all day events like this coming weekend’s Tag Rugby blitz or a 21st Birthday Party.

Closing the curtain on Friday night, all of us at Bruff RFC would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped this night become the fantastic success that it was, our many sponsors, entertainers, ticket sellers and finally to all of you, the general public that bought tickets, donated and turned up on the night. If anyone would still like to contribute to the fund, the paypal link for donations will remain on the website.

Would you like to see Jon Kenny and friends in Bruff RFC and at the same time support a very worthy cause, Coiscéim Eile?

Coiscéim Eile is a charity set up by John Ryan and his family, (Brother in Law of Mike and Lillian Cahill of Bruff RFC) coupled with families of people who use the Lokomat machine currently located in the First Step Centre in Patrickswell, Co. Limerick. Joan and Adele were involved in a car accident a few years ago, Joan was left partially sighted and Adele is paralysed from the chest down. This machine can be used by anyone with partial paralysis, or a multitude of other dehabilitating diseases and is available 8am to 8pm six days a week in the Patrickswell location. It reduces the requirement of Physios to deal with someone in this condition from 4 or 5 to just a single physio.

At the moment people without health insurance cover have to pay to use this machine but there is a considerable shortfall in the money required to keep this machine here. It is being paid for without assistance from the HSE by peoples’ goodwill and generosity. They have €150,000 more to collect before November to keep this machine in the Patrickswell location otherwise it must be returned. This is one of only two of these machines in the Country.

We have talked about this charity before on www.bruffrfc.com and you will remember it from the appearance of the Ryan Family with the Machine on the Late Late Show.

The Charity night is kicking off with Cáirde Ceol, leading into a show by Jon Kenny and finishing off with music by some friends of ours and his, this promises to be a great night, but we’re not stopping there. We’re also hoping to do a celebrity auction of some great sports memorabilia on the same evening with Jon as the MC.

Now while some of the Players are willing to go to extraordinary lengths to help out: we’re not asking that you do something like this for us:

Shiner has a go for a laugh.

This is for the big boys.

What we need from you is something much easier to give.

  • Just buy a ticket at €15 for the show on the 7th August, turn up and have a great night.
  • You Could supply us with some decent sports memorabilia that we can auction off on the Night.
  • If you can’t make it on the night, You could just donate a few euros to the fund, we will accept any donation that you can afford. This is a machine that helps people to walk properly again after serious accidents and also helps to keep peoples organs working even if they can’t learn to walk again. We’re not asking a lot, even a €5 donation ( Just the Price of a pint or ten cigarettes) will go a long way. Please leave your name and address, and other necessary details in the “Add instructions to Seller” box in paypal to get a receipt. It’s safe and secure, You can use either your own paypal account or just a credit card to donate and we will not see any of your financial information.
