Seniors beat Sligo to go third

Second from bottom Sligo were the visitors to Kilballyowen on Saturday for round 8 of the UBL.  Sligo had the better of the opening 10 minutes spending the majority of the opening period inside the Bruff 22. But solid Bruff defence and assertive tackling ensured that Sligo’s early dominance wasn’t rewarded. When Bruff eventually did clear their lines it was Sligo’s turn to show their resolve on the back foot. After 22 minutes the Bruff pressure eventually paid off when Brian Cahill got over for the opening try of the game under the Sligo post which was converted by Tony Cahill to make it 7-0. Bruff piled on the pressure for the remainder of the half and scored a 2nd try just on the stroke of half time, Again it was Brian Cahill who produced the goods to go over for the 5 pointer after a number of quick rucks involving backs and forwards.

The second half started as the first ended with Bruff dominating both possession and territory. It wasn’t until the 60th minute that Bruff’s endeavours were rewarded when Paidi Kilcoyne went over in the corner for a 3rd Bruff try. It was a text book score with Bruff moving the ball all the way from the right wing to the left wing while sucking in the Sligo defence with a number of well executed rucks along the way. Tony Cahill nailed the touch line conversion to put the gloss on the try which showed the value of playing simple rugby at a fast pace. Bruff pushed hard for the last 20 minutes but unfortunately were unable to add on a 4th try which would have yielded an important try bonus win. Instead they have to be content with a 19-0 win which takes Bruff up to third place on the table.
