Last Saturday, the 13th of August, saw the 6th annual Bull ‘n’ Booze tag rugby tournament kick off in Kilballyowen park. To say that it was a success would be an understatement, as 35 teams from all over Ireland and overseas participated on the day, along with countless others spectating to make it an occasion to remember.
Teams rolled into the carpark in Bruff as early as ten o’clock that morning and even the showers of rain that fell at times throughout the day could not dampen the spirits and atmosphere around the grounds. In fact the rain was, at times, a welcome addition to the proceedings as the competition became hot and heavy. A very high standard of tag rugby could be seen throughout, which is a credit to all the teams.
The whole event was played in a great sporting nature and was kept in order by Frank Butler and his band of very capable referees. The group stages, played over eight pitches, saw some very entertaining games throughout.
As the day rumbled on, certain teams began to come to the fore. It was these teams who went on to qualify from the group stages and into the business end of the competition. In the end, the A competition was won byTTR Awho defeatedLimerick Lionsin the final, while in the B competition, theRuggers and Huggers won a tightly contested final against theProTAGonists. Other winners on the day in the other competitons wereBallyhoura Hawks 1,TTR Cand Here For Beer.
The fun didn’t stop there. With a huge appetite built up by everyone over the day, a fine spread was laid on by the Ladies committee from the rugby club, which everyone was very appreciative of. As for the pig-on-a-spit,it must have been some sort of record as to how quickly it was devoured and disposed of. The craic and comradery then continued long into the night with a live band and fancy dress disco.
To begin to thank everyone involved would be next to impossible as so many people gave of their time selflessly. However special mention must go to Richard Leonard and his team, who insured the whole weekend ran smoothly and without a glitch. All that can be said now is roll on Bull ‘n’ Booze 2012. Lets hope it can be as good, if not better, than this year’s event.
